Write up the Grocery Aisle
by Patrick Werle

Well, it's August and summer is winding down. Soon we will be heading back to school, saying goodbye to summer vacations, and unpacking our favorite wool sweaters. There are also some new and exciting changes taking place at Mississippi Market. This month we will be initiating a new and exciting member benefit - our Member Specials program. This program will feature items at special sale prices for Co-op Members only. We will be working very hard to get good deals on the items you want and/or need. Member Specials will be noted by the appropriate shelf signage and automatically deducted from your sales total at the register. By the time you read this, the Member Special program should be underway. I'm sure there will be glitches to work out and rough edges to smooth, so please be patient as we institute this fabulous new benefit.

Boca Burger has launched a new product line for natural foods stores only. This line consists of several old favorites and a few new flavors, and all are certified organic and GMO-free. Boca will still be selling their original items in commercial and mass-market types of stores. The demand from consumers for organic and GMO-free products prompted Boca to issue this line specifically to meet the needs of natural foods shoppers. The new Boca Burgers are currently available and I encourage you to give them a try.

Looking ahead, September is Organic Harvest Month and we will celebrate by featuring organic products throughout the store. But what does the month's designation really mean? Nationwide, organic foods continue to be the only product category in the food industry gaining in popularity. This growing popularity brings a number of challenges in defining the meaning of organic. Is it just a production standard, or is there something to aspire to beyond organic? Will there continue to be a place for small farmers practicing organic farming sustainably, or will organic become agri-business as usual? As co-op members and consumers we must continue to diligently monitor the debate, influencing public policy whenever possible and making it a priority to support local, sustainable and organic agriculture.

Many member-owners ask us what more they can do for Mississippi Market. In addition to Shop Co-op, the next most important thing is to Talk Co-op.
